Mrs. Flora Nell Newman Gordon of Liberty, Ms., died on November 14, 2024 at her home in Liberty, Ms. Visitation is from 1:00 pm until 2:30 pm at Liberty Baptist Church with the funeral to follow at 2:30 pm on Sunday, November 17, 2024.
Mrs. Gordon was born February 13, 1927, at Glading in Amite County, Ms. and was the oldest of three children born to Roy Newman and Mable Burris Newman. She was a graduate of Liberty Public Schools and Copiah Lincoln Junior College.
After college, she began working as a legal secretary for the Liberty law firm or Gordon and Gordon. While working there she married Kenneth Gordon on October 15, 1948. They lived in Baton Rouge, Louisiana after their marriage for almost two years. Mrs. Gordon worked for the State of Louisiana while living in Baton Rouge. They then moved to Jackson, Ms. where she worked for the Veteran's Administration while her husband was attending law school. They returned to Liberty in 1952, and they both worked in the law firm of Gordon and Gordon. In1954 they purchased the Liberty Insurance Agency, and she served as an insurance agent with her husband until retirement.
Mrs. Gordon was a long-time member of Liberty Baptist Church and at the time of her death was the longest serving member of the church. She was baptized on November 14, 1937, when she was 10 years old, and died 87 years later to the day. She served for many years as the pianist for several different children's Sunday school departments, was a member of the choir, and served on various church committees. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Liberty Chamber of Commerce, and President of the Study and Improvement Club for three consecutive years.
In addition to her love for her church and family, she enjoyed playing bridge with her friends. She also enjoyed traveling with her husband and their daughter.
Mrs. Gordon was preceded in death by her parents Roy and Mabel Newman, her husband Kenneth Gordon, brother Dr. Paul Newman, sister Joyce Newman Tynes, brother-in-law John Davis Tynes, her nephew Johnny Tynes, and two great-nieces Joy Lewis and Andrea Tynes. She is survived by her daughter Marcia Lynn Gordon Mabry (husband Jesse), sister-in-law Sally Newman, and many beloved nieces and nephews in both the Newman and Gordon families.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either the Liberty Baptist Church or the Baptist Children's Village in Jackson, Ms.
Brown Funeral Home of Gloster, Ms. is in charge of the arrangements.
Pallbearers are Scott Stacey, Tom Lewis, Robert Newman, Mike Tynes, Roy Tynes, and Aubrey Legette.
