Jessie Henry (J.H.) McDowell, Sr. went to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 30, 2020. He was born on March 26, 1935 in Coles, MS to John Henry and Etta Minor McDowell. He was a member of Praise Cathedral Church of God in Bude, Ms. He sat on the Amite County Farm Bureau Board of Directors for 30 years, Senior Class President of the Crosby High School Class of 1953, a member of the 1949 MS state class B high school football championship team, and was the 2013 Southwest MS Forestry Association Tree Farmer of the Year. He retired from Armstrong Tire and Rubber Company and then started his own logging business. He was an avid deer hunter and enjoyed watching his sons and grandchildren play sports.  He is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Davis N. (Blue) McDowell and Robert Wayne (Bob) McDowell and his sister, Johnny Elaine Netterville. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Avis E. McDowell; his sons Jessie H. (Peggy) McDowell, Jr., R. Bruce McDowell,  Gregory M. (Yvette) McDowell; seven grandchildren, Jessica (Ryan) Davis, Benjamin (Candace) McDowell, Kayla McDowell, John Marcus McDowell, Kymberli McDowell, Katie Lyn McDowell, and Karli McDowell; five great grandchildren Tripp McDowell, Brooks Davis, Linley Davis, Adaline McDowell, Maren Davis, sisters Oneida Riddle and Hattie (James) Thomas.  Service will take place at Brown Funeral Home on Wednesday, September 2 at 10:00 am, officiated by Rev. Lee Miley,  and graveside to follow at the McDowell Cemetery on Highway 33 west of Coles.
